My Current Home: Cartagena, Colombia
I currently live in a the city of Cartagena de Indies (Cartagena of the West Indies). This city has roughly a million inhabitants within it's city limits. Cartagena faces the Caribbean Sea to the west and to the south is Cartagena Bay, which has two entrances: Bocachica (small mouth) in the south, and Bocagrande (big mouth...don't get any ideas of new names, dad!!) in the north. Cartagena is one of the oldest cities in Colombia and was founded in 1533. It was originally a major trading port, specializing in precious metals, and was also used as the treasury for Spain in the New World. Because of this, much of the Old City was walled in to protect the city from pirates. It was also a major slave trading port and thus the culture is still influenced by African traditions.
The climate in Cartagena is HOT and HUMID all year around! I have another phrase I use to describe the heat here but will refrain myself from using that term on this website not to embarrass my mother! There are two seasons here...rainy and dry but the temperature is always the same...HOT AND HUMID!! During December - February, we have some extra breeze which makes the HEAT and HUMIDITY more tolerable!
I live in a beautiful neighborhood called Crespo in a guarded apartment complex that sits directly on the beach !! ( I know...suffering for Js!!) I live in an apartment with my dog, Brody. I am very blessed that the organization has placed me in such a safe environment!
One of my favorite parts of this city are the Old City (El Centro) with it's beautiful old walls, cathedrals, museums, architecture, shopping, and food. It is so amazing to walk on the walls at night at look at the beach while drinking a delicious Colombian coffee! I would say I go there at least once a week as it is the closet thing to me and the cheapest taxi or bus ride from my home!
I hope each of you will come and visit me soon...
